Reflections and Recap

The Canes put on a show in Madison Square Garden Tuesday night, scoring 3 goals and earning net minder Pyotr Kochetkov a shutout in his first game of the season, and earning the Canes their first shutout of the season. Kocketkov made an impressive 26 saves in the crease, which grows more impressive when you realize he’s scoming off a lower-body injury that sidelined him before the regular season began. Additionally, Nikolaj Ehlers, whom the Hurricanes acquired during the off-season in a six year, 51 million dollar contract, got his first goal in a Canes jersey. Their record moves to 8-4-0 on the season. The team’s penalty kill continues to succeed, managing to kill all three of the Ranger’s power plays. The powerplay, which has been a bit of a struggle for the Canes this season and last, even got a bit of action as Ehlers scored on the power play in the first period.

Predictions and Comparisons

The Hurricanes are to face off against the Minnesota Wild in Raleigh on Thursday, November 6th at 7pm (EST). The Wild currently have a 5-6-3 record on the season and are coming off a two game win streak. In their last game, they defeated Nashville with a controversial goal in overtime.

Here’s some players to keep an eye on:

  • Kirill Kaprizov with 8 goals and 10 assists (MIN)
  • Seth Jarvis with 8 goals (CAR)
  • Brock Faber with 6 assists in the past 5 games (MIN)
  • Sebastian Aho with 8 assists (CAR)

Aside from goalscoring, injuries have riddled the season for the Hurricanes. Let’s take a look at the injury sheet for each team.

My Predictions

This faceoff should be a tough match for both teams, but I do believe that the Canes will win. Not only will they have home ice advantage, which is not taken lightly at Lenovo Center, but their stats seem to align with the win column. The performance that Carolina showed against the Rangers is going to be very tough to beat if they keep it up. The Wild, however, didn’t seem to outplay the Predators as much as many would expect. On the contrary, the sheer amount of injuries on the Carolina roster will prove a big challenege to the team, especially if more arrise during the game against Minneosta. However, the Canes have seemed to manage their injuries well in their previous games, putting up some decent fights against recent opponents. I expect that Brind’Amour will keep his lines similar to what we saw on Tuesday to try to ensure success. The Wild and the Canes both have successful goalie tandems, so I have reason to suspect that this game might come down to the goalies more than anything.
